Name Origination:
In 1881 the mountain was named after U.S. Civil War veteran General William Tecumseh Sherman. This area in Lake County, Colorado is rich in gold, silver, and mining history. The largest mine in Leavick area was the Hilltop Mine located on the southern slopes of Mount Sherman.

The mountain is still privately owned by the Day Mine Company in Leadville.  It is also the only 14er that has had a successful aircraft landing on its summit.
