Name Origination:
Historians disagree about the exact origin of the mountain's name. Uncompahgre is a word from the Ute language of which two translations are “red water spring” and “dirty water.” The origin of the name is a reference to the natural reddish hot springs located
near the present-day town or Ouray, also a favorite camping site of the Utes.
