The name Democrat first appeared on the map of the Land Office Survey in 1883 after it was renamed by a group of rebellious southern miners, who during the Civil War used it as a political statement against Republican Abraham Lincoln. The original name was Buckskin Peak after a mining camp north of Fairplay.
